learning and teaching

Specialist Program

Students at St Charles are able to express themselves through the following specialist learning areas: STEM, Discovery Learning, Visual Arts, performing arts/music, physical education, Italian language lessons and Social-Emotional Learning programs.

STEM

STEM education engages all students and provides scope and direction for their creative and critical thinking. STEM integrates the important subject areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. At our school, students learn how the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It teaches them computational thinking and focuses on the real-world applications of problem-solving. Through our partnership with CSIRO, students will be exposed to science experts who will work with us to plan and implement age-appropriate programs.

VISUAL ARTS

At St Charles Borromeo the Visual Arts program provides students with the opportunity to express themselves creatively, learn about various art styles and artists as well as using problem solving and critical thinking skills. Lessons take place in our purpose built Visual Arts room for one hour per week. Students are encouraged to explore and experience a range of skills and techniques, working with a wide variety of art materials. Student artwork is regularly on display within our school and celebrated in our biennial Art Show.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education is a vital component of the St Charles Borromeo’s School curriculum and community. Our focus is on developing confidence, strength and knowledge in the fundamentals of the body and movement. Through high-quality and meaningful activities, our students not only develop their skills, but also develop curiosity, have fun, learn the value of teamwork and sportsmanship, and strive for personal growth.

Students participate in a vast range of physical activities developing their fundamental motor skills, goal setting, sport specific skills, teamwork and strategy. Their involvement in PE ranges from individual, partner and group-based activities that help to promote physical literacy through physical skills.

Programs include:

  • Weekly P.E. sessions for all students. (1 hour)

The Languages curriculum aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to ensure that students:

  • communicate in the language they are learning

  • understand the relationship between language, culture and learning

  • develop intercultural capabilities

  • understand themselves as communicators.

DISCOVERY LEARNING

Discovery Learning lessons at St Charles Borromeo are designed to encourage and foster a lifelong love of reading and literature. Students visit and make use of our beautiful library space to borrow books for both home and the classroom. Activities include research skills, author studies, responding to literature and how the library operates and is arranged. Students enjoy the opportunity to find a quiet place to sit and enjoy time to read.
